In early October 2008, Brooks Institute hosted a very special F-Stop Beyond: In Living Color, which we produced in partnership with PhotographyMentor.com. A live webcast was held. Renown celebrity wedding and lifestyle photographer Mike Colon took almost three hours of his busy schedule to share his personal and professional take on life and the industry.

In this episode, Mike talks about what new photographers getting into the business should do, his take on advertising, and work/life balance.

Mike has been very public and vocal about his faith. It therefore seems apropos that in this seventh installment of our series with Mike, this is the episode where Mike talks about how and why he mixes his faith with his business. I also challenge him to reconcile his educational message of “image is everything” with the teachings of his faith.

In this episode, Mike takes questions from the audience, and answers such questions as how many photographers does he have on his team, the pros and cons of. being a high end (low volume) photographer vs. a high volume studio, etc.

We have a whopping six more episodes from this series. We’ll take a break to show at least one additional FSB In Living Color episode we did with Jeffrey and Julia Woods. Enjoy!

FSBTV015: Mike Colón – Part 2

January 3, 2009 5 comments

In this episode, Mike talks about how the image of the wedding photographer has changed over the years. And, as a perfect follow up to the last FSBTV episode (where Becker talks about being a mentor to Mike), it’s apropos to have this episode get Mike’s perspective on how they first met. Mike actually calls up Becker pretending to be a groom. But, at the time he really was going to be a groom.

Mike Colón Live at Brooks

September 29, 2008 3 comments

mikecolon.jpgMark your calendar folks for a major event in the world of wedding and portrait photography. Celebrity wedding and lifestyle photographer Mike Colón will be the next featured guest on “F-Stop Beyond: In Living Color”. We are partnering with PhotographyMentor.com to produce this episode, in association with Brooks Institute. I’m very excited about this event. It will be a sort of Inside the Actors’ Studio, but for photography. In true FSB style, I’ll be sure to ask Mike deep and personal questions to learn more about the man behind the lens. But, we’re also going to discuss some of his best photos and take questions from the audience.

What’s even more thrilling about this episode is that PhotographyMentor.com is going to stream it live to their chat room. So, if you can’t make it to the event in person, check it out live. You won’t want to miss this one!

The episode will air online as usual later this year.

DETAILS

The event is FREE. That’s right. Zero dollars. Zilch. Nada. Just bring a warm body and a good question. First come first serve.

Date: Next Monday, October 6, 7:30 pm PST
Location: Victoria Hall, 33 West Victoria St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

Cinematic Studios blog, or Ron’s Twitter for further details.

MORE BIG NAMES ON F-STOP BEYOND: IN LIVING COLOR

Also in the can and soon to be on the show is our interview with Kevin Kubota. Find out what it was like for little Kevvy-Kev growing up on the isle of Hawaii (FYI: I just made up the nickname. As far as I know, he was never called “little Kevvy-Kev.”) And, the original bad boy of wedding photography himself, the [b]-man will be on after that. We got chock full of exciting projects in the works. Tune in.
