Episode 54: Zack Arias
Fresh off the ONE Conference this week, I thought it apropos to air my interview with the ONE keynote speaker, Zack Arias. (My great interview with Jason Groupp will air a week before PhotoPlus Expo. Just in time to get you hyped up for his annual soirée.) Zack is an editorial and press photographer specializing in the music industry. In five years he’s photographed over 350 bands and indie artists in the fields of rock and hip-hip (including Big Boi, half of the hip-hop team Outkast). As successful as he now is, his career at one point highly contributed to the destruction of his first marriage. (He is now happily re-married). Zack shared the voice of “divorce” at the ONE Conference. How the pain, struggles, and cost of divorce is something no one should go through. In this interview, we briefly talk about the highlights from the conference (where Jen and Steve Bebb, Dane and Tami Sanders, and Jeff and Julia Woods all gave inspiring presentations); we learn about Zack’s beginnings as a young husband and dad fresh out of photography school; the financial missteps he made early in his marriage and career racking up debt to fuel his “G.A.S.” problem (Gear Acquisition Syndrome); and the pain he and his son endured when his wife left them. His story is a must for any couple in business together struggling under the pain of over-work. But, it’s not all about the marital problems. He also shares a funny anecdote about how we was able to photograph Big Boi…in exchange for teeth cleaning. You gotta listen to find out the details.
Today’s outro musical selection is “Know Where You Came From” by the Hip Hop Kidz, courtesy of Triple Scoop Music.
Next week, Scarlett Lillian shares about life, love, switching careers, and dealing with the pain of seeing two parents through cancer. It’s a heart felt interview you won’t want to miss.
